We use Fundationsas our daily, whole-group phonics program. In Fundations, we spend some time at the beginning of the year reviewing letters and sounds and high-frequency words (trick words) presented in kindergarten and then move into new skills and words. This program is good for even fluent readers as it stresses phonics rules our language follows so one understands why certain sounds are used as they are.
If your child is able to accurately read the trick words presented with fluency, you may wish to begin having them practice spelling the trick words as well. Children are allowed to use spelling resources in class, but memorizing how to spell these words correctly can provide your child with a bit more of a challenge when one is desired.
